I was fortunate to have a chance to go to the 2012 Bronko Nagurski Awards ceremony hosted by the Charlotte Touchdown Club the other night. It was a great evening, especially for me, being a Notre Dame graduate, as Manti Te’o, Notre Dame’s senior linebacker, won the award as college football’s best defensive player and Brian Kelly, Notre Dame’s head football coach, was the keynote speaker.

The awards finalists: Manti Te’o (Notre Dame), Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina), Jarvis Jones (Georgia), Dee Milliner (Alabama), and Bjoern Werner (Florida State) all seem like first-class individuals on and off the field. During the course of the evening they got a chance to speak on stage, and a common theme they each hit on was the importance of their team and how their teammates enabled them to be successful.

Brian Kelly talked about the ‘A Team’ and what that means at the University of Notre Dame. He said the A Team are guys whose approach to being student athletes raises the level of everyone around them. He used Manti Te’o as a specific example of an A Team guy because of his focus on doing the right things for the right reasons and doing it with a passion. As his teammate, you can’t ignore it, and that sense of purpose spreads and impacts everyone he encounters, especially his teammates. Coach Kelly talked about applying those characteristics towards success in life.
