One of the big questions today in scanners is can it scan a barcode on an LCD screen. The answer is some can but most cannot. First, let’s list the scanners that cannot scan a LCD screen. They are: Laser, Omni directional, and some area imagers. Lasers cannot and will never be able to scan an LCD screen because it uses a laser to reflect. Omni directional scanners also use lasers. Many imagers, particularly the older ones, cannot scan a screen. They have limited ability to compensate for reflection and light flooding.
That brings us to new area imagers, CCDs and liner imagers. CCDs can scan on a screen but not very well. A well-kept secret is that liner imagers can scan well on a screen. Of course they are limited to 1D barcodes.
Area imagers are best for scanning screens. Although old imagers have a hard time scanning we are seeing the new ones breaking ground. In this video we took the best of the imagers to test them side by side. They are…
- Honeywell xenon
- Motorola DS6708
- Motorola DS9808
- Honeywell/ Metrologic Genesis
With the need of scanning cell phones for loyalty cards you can bet that manufacturers are including this feature in any new upcoming imagers.
