19th Century School Gets 21st Century UC System

The Taft School in Connecticut was founded in 1890, a time when a new invention called the “telephone” was just coming into acceptance as a recognized form of communication. While the mission and integrity of this private boarding school remains as true today as it did at its founding more than a century ago, other aspects have evolved, several times over. Included in this evolution is their communications system which, recently, was due for an upgrade from analog to digital. After much discussion and exploration, the minds at the Taft School chose Mitel.

When looking at upgrading a school campus, there are many factors to take into consideration. It’s not just the staff who communicates, as in a typical business enterprise, but also the students in dorms, and visitors on campus. The Unified Communications system must seamlessly integrate the variety of users, while being easy to manage and cost-effective for the operators. The Taft School utilized Mitel’s MiCloud Enterprise, mobile app, webfax, and E-911 capabilities to streamline communications and improve the experience for students, parents, and faculty.

Throughout the upgrade process, the Taft School was able to reuse many of the existing assets, like some analog phones and lines, and keep those lines functioning as they migrated to the cloud. By skillfully navigating the potential pitfalls of an enterprise-wide deployment, they were able to migrate nearly 400 lines to the cloud without disruption to their operation. In the end, they also discovered they could drop almost 450 phone lines, which saves them about $1,000 per month on server fees and DID (direct inward dialing) numbers.
